Soccer scholarships are awarded by American college coaches to soccer players they recruit for their college team. The soccer scholarship may be full or partial, and the amount of the scholarship is a matter of negotiation. A fully funded scholarship, also called “full-ride”, covers all the costs of college. This includes tuition, room, board and books. The most valuable soccer scholarships are worth more than US$70,000 per year, or $280,000 for an undergraduate degree. The number of scholarships varies for each team as well as the school’s division.
Scholarships for Men’s Teams: up to 12
Scholarships for Women’s Teams: up to 14

The main season is played in the fall semester. Teams compete regionally and nationally divided into divisions (leagues) against other colleges. The top teams from each region qualify for the National Championships at the end of the season to determine the National Champions.
In college soccer, the players often arrive to campus a few weeks before the semester starts to begin the pre-season training.
This often consists of two training sessions per day: a soccer practice on the field and a strength or conditioning workout in the gym.
To prepare for the actual league play you compete in matches against other teams in the region or go on trips to face new competition. During conference play, you will have two games a week for several weeks in a row. This is often a physically challenging stretch for the team, which offers playing time for every player.
The champion of each league is determined via a play-off styled tournament. The tournament’s winners and highly ranked teams advance to the Regionals for the next round of play-offs. The last stop is the national championship tournament at the end of the year.
In the spring semester, the teams focus on specific soccer drills and getting in shape for the next season. During this period, you will develop a strong physical foundation for your summer training and league play at home.
The playing style in college soccer is more physical than in Europe. The training is intense and can last for two to three hours. Depending on what time of the year and to match all players’ availability, working out at 6am may become your reality soon. Each team has a head coach and several assistants. The sessions are clearly structured and consist of individual drills, game play and working on team specific moves.
Athletic trainers are available to teams on all days of the week and at gyms on campus. This means that the players have perfect conditions to take care of their body and prepare for the demands of college soccer.
Many aspiring soccer players are dreaming about a future professional career. To reach this goal, it takes talent, determination, hard work, financial resources and a bit of luck. However, this still might not be enough to become one of the pro soccer players.
College soccer provides a fantastic option for soccer talents. They get the opportunity to combine academic studies and their greatest passion. College soccer prepares student athletes for their professional career later in life by earning a recognized college degree while improving their soccer skills.
